Scientific and practical conference “To preserve not to eliminate. Decommunization and decolonization of Ukrainian culture: historical, monument preservation, and art history aspects”

The problems of decommunization and decolonization of Ukrainian culture in historical, legal, and art-historical aspects became the focus of attention of the participants of the scientific and practical conference, which took place on March 26, 2025 at the Vcentri HUB Communications Center.

The conference was organized by the Kyiv Center for Professional Development of Pedagogical Workers and the Institute for Cultural Research of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, which recently concluded an Agreement on Cooperation and Partnership. The program of the event, moderated by a leading researcher at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Historical Sciences Olga KOVALEVSKA, consisted of three lectures and a discussion panel.

The speech of Nadia HONCHARENKO, a senior researcher at the Institute for Cultural Research, emphasized the problem of choosing criteria for the preservation, rethinking, or dismantling of cultural heritage sites. The lecture by Marina MISCHCHENKO, Ph.D. in Law, head of the department of cultural heritage and monument preservation at the Institute for Cultural Research, was devoted to the peculiarities of the conceptual apparatus of the cultural heritage sphere of Ukraine and the analysis of issues related to elements of cultural heritage in school textbooks and programs for preparation for national examinations ZNО/NМТ. Doctor of Art History, Professor, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute for Cultural Research Olena BEREGOVA revealed the essence of Soviet cultural policy towards Ukrainian art, focused on the need to eliminate narratives and mythologies of totalitarian society from the Ukrainian cultural space and the need to provide the educational process with new methodological literature created taking into account the decolonization approach. A lively discussion among the conference participants confirmed the relevance of the proposed topics as important components of the national security system of Ukraine.
