Deputy Director of the Institute for Cultural Research of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, Dr.hab. (Musicology), Professor, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, Olena Berehova represented Ukraine at the International Scientific Congress on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Lithuanian composer and artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, which took place on October 16-18 in Vilnius.

In her presentation entitled “Music of Color by M.K. Čiurlionis and Ukrainian Musical Culture of the 20th-21st Centuries,”  the speaker from Ukraine drew parallels between the work of M.K. Čiurlionis and Ukrainian composers Stefania Turkevych-Lukiianovych, Yurii Shamo, and Lesia Dychko, who also had synesthetic thinking and a talent for the visual arts.

O.Berehova emphasized the trends common to Ukrainian and Lithuanian artists, in particular, their desire to combine the achievements of national cultures with European traditions and heritage, their focus on the synthesis of the arts, intermediality, visualization, symbolism, and philosophical understanding of music.

The Congress was attended by 50 scholars from Switzerland, Great Britain, Germany, the United States, Poland, Lithuania, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, China, Spain, Canada, and other countries.
